Demi Lovato Makes A Statement About Transgender Rights With Her BBMAs outfit
Another day, another slay.
One of the best things about Demi Lovato is that she's never afraid to speak her mind and as yet another example of her standing up for her beliefs, she made a pretty powerful statement about transgender rights during her performance at the Billboard Music Awards this weekend.
Having always shown strong support for her LGBTQ fans, Demi did so once again and took to the stage wearing a t-shirt with a bold print of the sign that represents gender-neutral bathrooms on the front.
If you're wondering just why this is so important, there's been a lot of discussion about transgender rights over in the US in the last few months, particularly after certain states - most notably North Carolina - have passed legilation refusing to let non-binary people freely use the toilet of their choosing. Instead, courts have ruled that they must use the one in line with the gender listed on their birth certificate, even though some may since have decided to identify to a different gender.
With Demi and Nick Jonas - who she's currently touring with - cancelling dates in North Carolina in response to the state passing this legislation, Demi has now decided to shout even louder about her disagreement with this discrimantory piece of law.
"One of our goals for the tour has always been to create an atmosphere where every single attendee feels equal, included, and accepted for who they are. North Carolina's discriminatory HB2 law is extremely disappointing, and it takes away some of the LGBT community's most basic rights and protections," Demi and Nick said in a joint statement at the time.
This pretty badass act of Demi's at the BBMAs doesn't end there though, and even better, you can actually buy Demi's shirt as part of her tour merch. The money made from sales also goes straight back into supporting organisations in North Carolina that support LQBTQ teens and those fighting against the bill.
Worth every penny or what?
