Fatboy Slim Praises Bestival With Live Choir
REVIEW: Norman Cook’s Birthday Bash was the party of the summer…
Saturday, September 7, 2013 - 11:19
A decade since playing the inaugural Bestival back in 2004, Norman Cook returned to the Isle Of Wight to give the festival a well-deserved birthday bash which did not disappoint.
Feeling: Half an hour before his headline set, the heavens had soaked the site giving the nautical-themed festivities a distinctly authentic feel. That said, as soon as Cook to the stage, a video of the DJ blowing out candles on a cake not only signalled the start of the birthday bash but also effectively blew away the rainclouds too. Spirits were high and the party wellies were well and truly on.
The Look: It wouldn’t be a Fatboy Slim gig without Cook wearing his trademark Hawaiian shirt.
Simply a DJ behind a table and a pair of decks, Cook doesn’t need fancy staging, the main attraction is him.
However for this special occasion his projections ranged from sinister painted faces of Cook himself to countdown clocks heralding a huge breakdown in the music to the crowd enjoying themselves below.
Half way through the set, a frenetic lazer show ensued which no doubt could have been witnessed from the International Space Station! Giant lit-up balloons also descended onto the crowd giving a few dozen fans a rather large keepsake of the night!
Usually during a main stage festival set someone lets of a red flare. This year, Fatboy wanted in and set some off himself!
Tunes: Among teasing the crowd vocals from his own anthems such as Ya Mama, Right Here Right Now, Star 69 and more, Cook brought Balearic mainroom madness from the likes Robbie Rivera, Knife Party and Steve Aoki to Robin Hill Country Park.
Ending on his Rockerfeller Skank/The Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction mash up Fatboy’s set was full of bangers.
Banter: “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” was the mantra of the set, a fitting festival motto which just so happens to be the producers’ current project.
Special Guests: Aside from onscreen “cameos” from Etta James and a tribute, face-morphing montage including everyone from Tommy Cooper to Einstein, as Cook’s set drew to a close, the familiar piano stabs of Praise You started to play and Bestival curator Rob Da Bank (at least we think it was from where we were standing!) emerged “playing” a grand piano before a choir clad in white sang a live choral version of Cook’s No.1 smash hit. Truly wonderful.
Sweat Factor: With the tens of thousands of suitably soaked beforehand, Cook kept the energy up and turned any moisture into steam!
Summary: In short, Norman Cook knows how to throw a party and this one rocked the Bestival boat. A man who obviously still loves what he does, Fatboy Slim is one of the country’s most prized dance assets.
Bestival has come a long way, baby and its not going anywhere. Here’s to another decade and more Fatboy Slim parties!
