5 Acts We Loved At Secret Solstice 2019

We headed to Iceland's best kept secret to see what happens at a festival where the sun never sets. Spoiler alert: it was AMAZING!

The first festival on MTV’s Europe’s Best Fests was the extra special Secret Solstice in Reykjavik, Iceland. Every summer the iconic festival comes to Iceland’s capital for three days of partying where the sun never sets with a line-up of some of the biggest names in the world of music.

We head to check it out and we weren’t disappointed. Read on for our top picks from across the festival…

Pussy Riot

The Secret Solstice line-up is known for its musical diversity, with one perfect example of this being their booking of Russian punk group, Pussy Riot. Often more widely known more for their activism than their music, we had to go and check them out while in Reykjavik and we were not disappointed.

IVAREY THORSSON

Their insanely energetic brand of feminist punk got the crowds at Secret Solstice on their feet as they whizzed through their politically charged back catalogue. Donning their trademark neon balaclavas as they bound around the stage in the glorious Icelandic sun, we couldn’t think of a better way to spend our time at the festival.

Yxng Bane

We’ve been following Yxng Bane’s journey since he was selected as a nominee for MTV Brand New For 2018, so seeing him perform at Secret Solstice in Iceland was a great moment.

Dman Gilbert

Baney Boy’s sets are always high energy and this one was no different as he performed hit tracks such ‘Bestie’ and ‘Rihanna’. He even pulled up some lucky fans from the crowd to dance on stage with him – we low key wished he’d picked us to be honest.

Black Eyed Peas

No-one knows how to start a party quite like the Black Eyed Peas. Facts. With over 20 years of experience in the biz we couldn’t wait to see what they would bring to their headline slot at Secret Solstice this year.

Alec Donnell Luna

We caught up with the band before their set and they revealed that this was their first show in Iceland, and what a first show it was. A whistle-stop tour through their two-decade-spanning back catalogue meant we were able to dance to ALL of our faves such as ‘Boom Boom Pow’, ‘Hey Mama’ and their new single ‘Be Nice’, all while the sun was still shining!

Jonas Blue

MTV fave Jonas Blue was another headliner at this year’s Secret Solstice festival and he brought his A-game to his set. Over the last few years Jonas Blue has become a staple in not only the charts but in the collaboration game. If they’re a noteable musician, you can guarantee Jonas Blue has worked with them on an infectious bop.

Alec Donnell Luna

His songsare the perfect summer soundtrack and as he played tracks such as ‘Mama’, ‘Ritual’ and, of course, ‘Perfect Strangers’ for the crowds in Iceland we never wanted his set to end. Also, I don’t think we’ve mentioned it yet, but THE SUN NEVER GOES DOWN, even during his 11pm set. Dreamy!

Pusha T

With the last-minute cancellation of Rita Ora due to a chest infection left a hole in the festival line-up, the Secret Solstice team managed to bag hip-hop legend Pusha T to fill the gap, and although we missed Rita, Pusha gave us his all during his set.

IVAREY THORSSON

With a career spanning over 20 years we were treated to a banger-filled set including iconic hip-hop tracks such as ‘Untouchable’, ‘Nostelgia’ and if course, 2011’s ‘Trouble On My Mind’ – we were just missing that Tyler verse but it still slapped.

Secret Solstice was so special. Bring on 2020!
