#MTVFestivalSeason: Kendrick Lamar Has The Recipe For One Heck Of A Party At Wireless
Pulling in the biggest crowd of the day, Kendrick kept our vibe going strong at Wireless...
Kendrick Lamar was clearly hyped to be in London on the 4th of July, co-headlining day two of New Look Wireless Festival, in the penultimate slot of the afternoon. Regularly stopping to soak up “the vibe” throughout his performance, the California boy set Finsbury Park on fire with a hit-packed set to rival Drake’s the evening before.
While Made In Chelsea star Oliver Proudlock soaked up the show from the Golden Circle, stopping to take selfies with fans between tracks, the main stage crowd had all eyes on Kendrick.
It didn’t hurt that Childish Gambino had warmed everyone up by whipping his shirt off and showing those Magic Mike XXL abs during his set, but we were cool with Kendrick keeping his clothes on, so we could focus on the music.
‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’ and ‘Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe’ were obvious crowd-pleasers, the 50,000-strong audience hanging on Kendrick’s every word and movement, waving their hands in the air and hopping on friends’ shoulders for a better view.
Pointing out fans from the front row who have followed him for years, Kendrick came across a girl he didn’t recognise, but who knew every word to every track. Asking for her name, we’re pretty sure she said Helena or Leyla, but since KL thought the girl said “Malaysia” we’re gonna go with that.
Though he may not always get their names right, the rapper is all about his fans, repeatedly telling them he wouldn’t be where he is today if it wasn’t for them. “I said I wasn’t gonna play this,” Kendrick told us, before launching in to ‘The Recipe’, again putting his last minute change of plan down to feeling the vibe from the crowd.
And, while we can’t comment on the women or the weed, the weather certainly made London feel like LA when Kendrick Lamar was on stage at Wireless.
Let’s see what day three of the festival has to offer, as Nicki Minaj and David Guetta take to the stage!
