So it's not entirely surprising to hear that the filmmaker is claimed to be preparing to leave the franchise to avoid further rows about how saucy the sequels should be - with the author demanding more explicit action.
A source told The Sun: "Sam won't be back for the Fifty Shades sequels. She wants out and Universal knows that's the right decision.
"Her relationship with Erika has become toxic. They despise each other and blame each other for the problems with the film.
"All the biggest arguments were about the sex scenes in the film. Erika wanted the movie to be loyal to the book and much more explicit."
The film has performed astonishingly well at the box office, but some critics and fans have been left disappointed by a lack of hot 'n' heavy action.
Taylor-Johnson, an acclaimed modern artist-turned-movie director, apparently wanted to make the film "more than just a collection of S&M scenes", according to the paper's mole.
