5 Reasons You Need To Try Team Sports
Because PE lessons don’t have to scar you for life.
We know team sports all too well. Frozen fingers, skanky gym shorts, hockey sticks connecting with ankles... it’s not exactly fun, right? But playing team sports beyond PE lessons can be a completely different ball game. That buzz you get from training with teammates and nailing a win is something you just don't get from hours on the treadmill.

Netball, football, rugby, cricket – whatever you're playing, the benefits of team sports can be huge. And whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro, there are social teams to suit your ability, age and time commitments. Working out on your own can be great, but playing with a team can take your fitness to another level! Still not convinced? Read our top reasons why you should join a sports team ASAP.
1. Ready-made mates
One of the best things about team sports? Instant friends. These are the people you train with, win with, lose with – there aren’t many bonds that match those made in the heat of sporting battle. If you find it hard to make new friends, joining a team is a great shortcut. And make sure you organise team drinks (#workhardplayhard)
2. More support than a sports bra
So these brand new mates you've made – they're going to make you feel amazing. This lot couldn't care less about how much money you have, your relationship status or any of your insecurities. They're the ones cheering you on, clapping your successes and pulling you up by your shirt when you fall in the mud. Think of your team as your own personal support network.
3. Body confidence
Feeling strong = confidence. When you play sport your bones, muscles and joints become tools for your success. Rather than something for you to criticise, your body has a bigger purpose – to help you kill it out on the pitch. No one gives a damn about how much your thighs wobble as you sprint against your opponent, all they want from those thighs is power and speed. It feels SO GOOD to focus on results and performance rather than how you look.
4. The power of distraction
Sport has this incredible power to make you forget that you're exercising. Rather than watching the clock in a gym class, sport sucks you into the moment and takes your mind off the pain. Sport provides a fast-paced distraction from all negative thoughts and allows you to work harder for longer. There’s no time to think about emails, bills or anything else stressful when there’s a hockey ball flying at your face. Trust us.
5. Find your focus
Bosses love sporty employees, and it's not hard to work out why. Committing to a sports team builds confidence, develops communication skills and teaches you about effective time management – all essential for the work world. Take some of that fierceness you have on the netball court and bring it to the boardroom – you'll be running the place in no time.
