Frozen's Idina Menzel Wants Elsa To Be Disney’s First Gay Princess
It looks like Disney will introduce its first LGBT hero soon!
Earlier this year, you might have seen the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend gaining some serious traction on Twitter, as fans campaigned for the Frozen star to become Disney’s first LGBT princess. And while the studio itself has yet to comment on the movement, leading lady Idina Menzel has come out to say she would fully support playing Elsa gay in the sequel.
“Maybe at first I was a little surprised because it's Disney,” says the star, “but I can say that I'm excited that the conversation is happening. I can't promise anybody that that's what's gonna happen. I'm just a servant at a big company called Disney and I'm happy to have a role and a job. But deep down am I really happy that it's causing people to talk about it and have these kinds of conversations? Yeah, I am.”
Menzel, who previously starred in LGBT drama Rent back in the ‘90s, says it’s not the first time she’s considered the impact of her work on the gay community. “I'd get all these amazing letters from young kids struggling with their sexual orientation and who they were and how they wanted to come out,” she says, “and it's continued to be like that, really, with Wicked and Frozen, with Elsa.”
It certainly feels like there’s a bit of momentum building with this one… Whether it happens in Frozen, or a new franchise entirely, we wouldn't be surprised to see Disney introduce an LGTB princess sooner rather than later. Yaasss!
