Northern Irish actor JJ Murphy has died at the age of 86 - just four days after filming his first scenes for Game Of Thrones.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, the veteran actor collapsed and died suddenly on Friday (8 August).
Murphy - whose film credits include Mickybo And Me, Cal and Angela’s Ashes - trained with the Ulster Group Theatre School, and later worked at Belfast’s Lyric Theatre.
In addition to being cast as Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night’s Watch, in the fifth season of Game Of Thrones, he had been due to appear in big budget vampire film Dracula Untold.
The producers of Game Of Thrones have not yet confirmed whether his part will be re-cast, or whether scenes will be rewritten.
Murphy’s agent Philip Young paid tribute to the actor, saying: “I have never encountered a man with more spirit, passion and love for his craft.”
Our thoughts are with his family.
