Everything You Need To Know About Gears Of War 4
Marcus Fenix is BACK - but what else is new in the latest installment in the Gears of War series?
It’s been nearly ten years since Gears of War debuted on the Xbox 360 and introduced us to protagonist Marcus Fenix, a soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments tasked to lead a last-ditch effort to destroy the Locust Horde and save humanity.
Three exhilarating sequels later and the Locust Horde are finally dunzo, but at what cost for the remaining inhabitants of planet Sera? Five years after the third installment in the successful franchise blasted its way into our hearts we finally get to find out with the release of Gears of War 4.
Here’s everything you need to know about the fourth entry…
Gears of War 4 begins 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3 - which saw everyone on planet Sera witness the activation of the Imulsion Countermeasure bomb: an extreme tactic by the human race that successfully wiped out all the Imulsion on planet Sera, and with it both the Locust and Lambent threats. Playing as J.D. Fenix (the son of Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud), you will join forces with Delmont “Del” Walker and Kait Diaz to take on a new monstrous race of creatures that threaten Sera, known as the Swarm.
Unfolding over five acts, with multiple chapters comprising each act, Gears of War 4 offers an extensive campaign that can be played in single-player or co-op modes; with player one controlling J.D., while the second player has a the choice of playing as Del or Kait. As your squad moves through each chapter, encountering bigger bad’s the further you progress, expect the same kind of thrilling third-person shooter action that made the previous entries in the franchise such a joy to play.
Like previous entries in the franchise, enemy types change as you progress in Gears of War 4, and one of the ways the game’s developers have kept this entry fresh is by introducing a number of new enemies for J.D. and his squad to battle. From various robotic “DeeBee” soldiers courtesy of COG to a number of alien adversaries known as the Swarm, these new additions have been plucked straight out of your worst nightmares. They include small bouncy creatures called Juvies that like to rush at you in packs; leaping beasts that fire quills from their tails called Pouncers; four different Drones that pack different levels of heat; and some not-so-cute creatures aptly named Snatchers that like to 'snatch' humans and hold them inside their body.
A new set of enemies requires a new set of inventive ways to blast them to sh*t and Gears of War 4 does not disappoint with it’s new arsenal. From what we’ve seen so far, there’s the Dropshot; a modified mining tool which launches aerial mines with drills attached to them. The Buzzkill; a rapid-fire killing machine which has been fashioned from construction equipment and sends buzzsaws flying through the air in all directions. There’s also a pretty neat looking combat knife that allows you to sneak up behind enemies and gut them at close range.
Adverse to change? There’s really no need to fret, as you can also equip yourself with returning favourites such as the Gnasher and Lancer.
Billed as the “The King of Co-op”, Horde 3.0 sees four players fighting against a constant wave of enemies. Not only will you need to plan your attacks, you’ll also have to build defences to help protect your team and upgrade your character’s class skills whilst battling all kinds of nasties. It won’t be for everyone, but with Gears of War 4 introducing Horde-style sections direct into the main campaign, everyone will get a little taster of how absolutely nuts this game can get if you’re up to the challenge.
A New Way To Play
As well as being the first entry to show up on the Xbox One, Gears of War 4 is also the first in the franchise to show up on both the Xbox platform and PC at the same time. Purchasing a copy of the game will get you both versions fyi, so the once utterly mind-boggling possibility of playing the game on your Xbox one minute before picking up where you left off on your PC the next - since all the save data is cloud-based - is now very much a reality.
