*** Franz Ferdinand are the leading contenders for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize, say bookmakers. Ladbrokes are refusing to take any more bets, revealing that the band's self-titled debut is clear favourite. Spokesman Warren Lush said: "Money points to glory for Franz Ferdinand but the biggest gamble has been on The Zutons". The winner will be announced on September 7.
*** Michael Jackson has responded to claims that he paid people off to avoid child molestation charges. A statement from MJ reads: "Years ago, I settled with certain individuals because I was concerned about my family and the media scrutiny that would have ensued if I fought the matter in court... I have been a vulnerable target for those who want money".
*** The Beta Band have announced details of their farewell tour. They will call at the following places: Glasgow (November 12), Leeds (13), Liverpool (14), Middlesborough (15), Nottingham (17), Cardiff (18) Manchester (19), Sheffield (21), Bournemouth (22), Brighton (23), Norwich (24), Northampton (26), Oxford (27), Cambridge (28) and London (29).
*** Blue members are said to be embarking on solo projects. Lee Ryan is set to sing at a fundraiser for US presidential candidate John Kerry, while Simon Webbe has reportedly signed a solo deal with the group's label, Innocent Records, and has already started work on his debut album. Meanwhile, Louis Walsh has suggested that Blue's next album will be their last.
*** Beyonce Knowles' 23rd birthday bash was reportedly cut short by police officers. The celebration was brought to an end following neighbours' complaints about the noise. Boyfriend Jay-Z hired the top floor of the hip Soho House Hotel in New York for the bash, where 100 friends arrived wearing white. It is said to have set the rap sensation back 280,000.
*** Ex-Libertines star Pete Doherty and Massive Attack singer Dot Allison are now an item, according to tabloid reports. The two have been friends for a long time but are allegedly planning to move in together. Allison also joined Pete when he appeared in court last week. "She has vowed to stand by him and help him beat his addictions", says a friend.
