VMALAs 2005: Cancelled

Event forced to cancel due to record strength hurricane

The MTV Video Music Awards Latin America 2005 have been cancelled in the face of Hurricane Wilma.
The category five storm " the most powerful hurricane on record - is currently in the Gulf of Mexico and is headed for Cuba and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The VMALAs 2005, which were to be hosted in Mexicos Playa Del Carmen, were initially to be held a day early to avoid the storm.
But today MTV Latin America issued a statement postponing the awards until further notice: "It is with great regret that MTV Latin America has decided to postpone the 2005 Video Music Awards Latin America due to the increased intensity of Hurricane Wilma. While the eye of the storm is not expected to hit the Mexican Caribbean, we feel its effect is close enough to greatly impact our production.
"Unfortunately given the magnitude of this event, we could not wait for further developments to make this decision without jeopardizing the creative integrity of the show given the risk of talent cancelationas and the dismantling of a production this size. Furthermore, the safety and security of our staff, audience, talent and clients is our top priority."
Among those set to perform at the ceremony were Shakira, Ricky Martin and Foo Fighters.
