George Michael Releases Royal Wedding Song
He covers a Stevie Wonder track as a wedding gift for Wills and Kate…
George Michaelhas recorded a cover of Stevie Wonder’sPrince Williamand Kate Middleton. After initially completing the track in one day, he returned and recorded it a second time to make it “even more romantic”.
George debuted the track on Piers Morgan’s CNN show. "The idea came to me last week, about a week ago, that I should express my happiness at the marriage publicly," he explained to Piers, adding that Stevie Wonder had “waived the rights [to royalties] until way after the wedding,” enabling the track to be available for free.
On his choice of song, George said: “Suffice to say it's a beautiful song and it was never a single so chances are you don't know it... But I think it's a perfect fit.”
But the plan almost went awry after George’s record label tried to charge him for every free download, which would have made it "the most expensive wedding pressie I ever gave anyone". Thankfully they relented, but generous George added: "I'd like Will and Kate to know I was prepared to do that.”
You & I is available as a free download from GeorgeMichael.com, but the singer is also encouraging fans to make a contribution to the Royal Wedding Charity Fund, which gives money to good courses in lieu of wedding gifts.
