George Michael's New Single Is A Disco Dance Floor 'Fantasy'
The iconic singer teamed up with Chic's Nile Rodgers for his first posthumous release...
The world mourned a huge musical loss when George Michael died last year, although his voice lives on for us all.
'Fantasy' is the new posthumous single that the singer was working on with disco legend Nile Rodgers before he passed away and it's peak George Michael: a self-written, soulful and sexy call to the dance floor.
The song was originally recorded for his 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 but didn't make the cut, with a version later ending up on a reissue of his Faith album in 2011.
If I could touch your body
I know not everybody
Has got a body like you
Oh, but I gotta think twice
Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play
Because I play them too
Oh, but I need some time off from that emotion
Time to pick my heart up off the floor
Oh, when that love comes down without devotion
Well, it takes a strong man, baby
But I'm showin' you the door
'Cause I gotta have faith
I gotta have faith
Because I got to have faith, faith
I got to have faith, faith, faith
Baby, I know you're asking me to stay
Say please, please, please don't go away
You say I'm giving you the blues
Maybe you mean every word you say
Can't help but think of yesterday
And another who tied me down to loverboy rules
Before this river becomes an ocean
Before you throw my heart back on the floor
Oh baby, I've reconsidered my foolish notion
Well, I need someone to hold me
But I'll wait for something more
Yes, I gotta have faith
Mm, I gotta have faith
Because I've gotta have faith, faith, faith
I gotta have faith, faith, faith
I'll just have to wait
Because I got to have faith
I gotta have faith
I got to, got to, got to have faith
Before this river becomes an ocean
Before you throw my heart back on the floor
(I've just got to have faith)
Oh, oh baby, I've reconsidered my foolish notion
Well, I need someone to hold me
But I'll wait for something more
'Cause I gotta have faith
Mm, I gotta have faith
Because I've gotta have faith, faith, faith
I gotta have faith, faith, faith
The new version of 'Fantasy' is a throbbing mix of the pop, house and disco sounds that Michael made his own during his experimental career, and his vocals sound as phenomenal as ever.
After being left on the cutting floor back in 1990, 'Fantasy' leads the upcoming reissue of Listen Without Prejudice, which is being re-released alongisde previously unreleased recordings from his iconic MTV Unplugged set, on October 20.
The 'Faith' singer gave a phenomenal MTV Unplugged performance in 1996 to promote his Older album and was noted by the singer as one of his favourite shows, partly due to it being the last time his mother saw him perform.
The anticipated album release will be accompanied by the documentary film that George was working on in 2016, his final project, entitled Freedom, which was first announced earlier this year and will air on Channel 4 in October.
Freedom is narrated by the late singer himself and will no doubt be an emotional watch, yet an essential ode to his legacy and tribute to his life.
Nile Rodgers will appear in the documentary alongside Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Mark Ronson, Mary J. Blige, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Jean Paul Gaultier, James Corden and many, many more.
