George The Poet: "There's A Lot Of Weird Stuff That's Gone Into Making Me"
Wax lyrical with our next Brand New For 2015 nominee...
Spoken word doesn't often find its way into the mainstream but our next Brand New For 2015 nominee aims to change all that. Introducing George The Poet who, growing up in Neasden, said he "saw a lot of things that I wanted to talk about" and started addressing his subject matter through rap, grime and eventually poetry.
"By the time I got to doing poetry I couldn't be bothered with any gimmickry, I just wanted people to know exactly what I was trying to say so I came up with the most imaginative name I could: George The Poet," he reveals.
"My biggest influences have always been leaders, I like a leader," he tells us. "When I was young I use to look up to Gandhi, I looked up to Malcolm X, I looked up to anyone who stood up and was about something…especially when it's hard, when it's awkward, when everyone leans on you to make you feel like 'yo you need to relax'.
"Mohammed Ali as well, he was a talker but at the same time he was a doer. Michael Jordan, same thing he was a talker but he was a doer and then musically my influences are more like Nas, Tupac, Eminem…There's a lot of weird stuff that's gone into making me!"
"I've got so much to say, so much to do and Ive got a very short attention span," he grins, "so you're gonna be bombarded but I'm gonna try and make it as enjoyable as possible."
Bring it on George!
