Get to Know: Dermot Kennedy
We caught up with the exciting new artist to find out a little bit more about him and his music...
This week's featured artist is an incredible musician from Dublin.
Dermot's career has gotten off to an incredible start. Not only has he already released a critically acclaimed mixtape Mike Dean Presents: Dermot Kennedy but he's also amassed over 40 million Spotify streams with his breakthrough hit 'After Rain' alone.
We were lucky enough to catch up with the rising star this week.
Check it out below...
1) For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
I’m Dermot Kennedy and I’m a 26-year-old songwriter from Dublin, Ireland.
2) Describe your sound in three words…
Acoustically-rooted, hip-hop influenced. Too many words probably, my bad.
3) Who inspired you to start a career in music?
Probably Glen Hansard or David Gray. They were the first two artists whose music I really fell in love with, in terms of their lyrics and their delivery.
4) Who are your biggest musical influences?
I would probably say Justin Vernon from Bon Iver. As someone who started out just making songs with an acoustic guitar, everything Justin Vernon has done and been involved in has shown me that you can keep that power and honesty in your music and let the music build and progress too. Especially the stuff he did with Kanye.
5) Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new music…
My newest single “Young & Free” is one I had been living with for a while. I wrote it a long time ago and the hook in the chorus is what came first and then I built the song around that. I had a love/hate relationship with this song for a while but I’m so excited for it to be out in the world now.
6) What can we expect from your live shows?
I like to think you can expect a passionate performance of some songs I’m proud of and a real exchange between me and the people who are there. If I can help people really shut the world out for an hour or so then I’m happy.
7) What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
I’ve gotta say playing a sold-out show in the Olympia Theatre early this year. It sold out pretty much on the first day and I’ve dreamed of playing there for a very long time. It was a real moment and I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon.
8) Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
I did actually meet Justin Vernon once in Boston when I was much younger. And it’s the only time in my life that I’ve had the whole deal, shaky hands and cotton throat!
9) What’s on your iPod/playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
A lot of Stormzy. His album is probably my most listened to artost in the last year. He seems to be a great person with a great message, creating art for all the right reasons.
10) When can we see you live?
I’m just about to play the last show of my North American tour in Vancouver! It’s been an awesome tour and we’re playing a bunch of different festivals over the summer before probably returning to the US and Europe for some more shows in the Autumn.
