Get To Know: Jvck James
Taking the classic 90s R&B sound in his own direction..
Jvck James is putting his unique print on 90s R&B. In fact, despite not being old enough to remember the decade, each new song he's released has proved to play on the era's classic sound with his own signature flair.
The East London artist has developed on influences as classic as D'angelo's soulful R&B all the way to modern revolutionaries like Frank Ocean, in order to reinterpret the genre with his own lens. On tracks like his new single 'Wine' he's not afraid to jump from call and response spoken word to lush vocals in an instant, all the meanwhile experimenting with pitch-shifted harmonies.
At only 19-years-old, and early in his career, the boundaries he's already pushing are certainly impressive. With each new single he releases, whether it be 'Extroverted Lovers', 'On My Way' or 'Fears' he shows a new, fresh direction and sound he's capable of exploring - and we expect that this is only the beginning.

1) For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
My name is JVCK JAMES. Born in 98’. Raised in East London. I sing, write & produce music.
2) Describe your sound in three words…
Fresh, Soulful & Authentic
3) Who inspired you to start a career in music?
I used to rinse Michael Jackson videos when I was younger. He is the GOAT. When an artist can make timeless music and be able to perform it to the highest of standards live, it’s definitely refreshing to see. It’s exciting to me. Beyoncé, Usher and Bruno Mars are also artists that I watched growing up.
4) Who are your biggest musical influences?
To name a few: Kendrick Lamar, MJ, Kirk Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Frank Ocean & D’Angelo
5) Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new single ‘Wine’…
I met Toronto producer LordQuest on Instagram. He sent me a few beats to vibe with & I ended up picking out what is now ‘WINE’. I wrote & recorded it in my bedroom, the place I like making music the most. When I’m by myself I can take as much time as I want experimenting with the track hence all of the weird voices and harmonies. TBH I was just having a load of fun with it!
With the writing I kinda just wanted to celebrate being youthful. 19 can be stressful. When your fresh out of college and the reality hits that you basically need to get your life in order it can be overwhelming. So, I decided to flip it & turn it into something positive. We’re all striving to be the best versions of ourselves but have to realise it takes time to age like fine wine. God’s timing is the perfect time.
6) What can we expect from your live shows?
The stage is where I feel most at home so expect to see me just having fun singing my likkle heart out. Your guaranteed to feel an emotional connection.
7) What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
I held my first headline show in August which happened to sell out. On top of that, to have people sing your own words back to you is super weird. A weird feeling I could get used to.
8) Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
Meeting Solange after her performance at Lovebox was definitely another highlight. Just to be able to tell her how much her album ‘A Seat At The Table’ moved me was fulfilling. She’s such a beautiful human being. I also met Jermaine Jackson back in 2012.
9) What’s on your iPod/playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
Lorde, Bon Iver, Coldplay, Chloe x Halle & Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
10) When can we see you live?
I’ll be going on my first tour around the UK in October with the incredible Mahalia!! Her contributions to the UK R&B scene are very much needed and I’m super excited to be on the road with her.
