Get To Know: Lily Moore
Fall in love with our latest artist on the rise in this week's introducing interview...
Cast the (well-founded) Amy Winehouse and Lianne La Havas comparisons aside, singer/songwriter Lily Moore's star is rising on her own merit.
The former Brighton busker recently rounded off a run of sold-out headline shows in London and last month released her latest stunningly soulful EP I Will Never Be so we just HAD to Get To Know her in our latest introducing interview...
Put my red dress on
I could call you baby
Or not
When we go out I'll make you prouder
Leave a good impression
So your friends tell their friends who you've got
There must be something about you
Why would you need
To be corrupted by somebody like me?
But I will never be
Everything you need
Enough for you to leave you sleepless in the night
I heard that that's what lovers do, woo
Well, I will never be
The first thing in your mind
When you wake up like the best drug you ever tried
Leave you restless all the time, woo
I will never be
What you are to me
In a crowded room
I watch you dancing
It isn't half as bad as you think it is
And the way you move
Makes me a little nervous
When you see me dance
I hope you can forgive
I meant to say I like it
And nurse my bloody wounds in private
So you don't see we're divided differently
But I will never be
That girl that you could never ask
Hung back and waited after class
Oh, she really had your heart, woo
I will never be
Hard work, ungrateful or disloyal
Anything to make you smile
You just leave me in the aisle, woo
I will never be
The girl you call when you get drunk
You'd watch her sleeping just for fun
The one you think of when you come
Woo, oh
I will never be
That one thing you would try to save
And if your lost words are her name
Least I know I tried in vain, woo
I will never be
What you are to me
1) For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
"I'm Lily, born in London but grew up in Brighton. I now live in London again whilst I'm doing my favourite thing, singing and writing songs everyday."
2) Describe your sound in three words…
"Soulful, gritty, truthful."
3) Who inspired you to start a career in music?
"Nobody. I’ve always loved singing from a young age and it's all I've ever wanted to do!"
4) Who are your biggest musical influences?
"Aretha Franklin, Alabama Shakes, Etta James."
5) Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new single/album…
"All the songs on my latest EP I Will Never Be were really easy and enjoyable to write as I would go in the studio each day knowing exactly what I wanted the song to be about. Sometimes this was a chorus line or other times it was just a mood I was in.
"I wrote 'Know I Wanna Be With You' after overhearing a phone call of one of my friends on the phone to her boyfriend. So yeah, they're all really natural and fun to write which I think makes for a good song. The recording process was brilliant as I was able to work with some brilliant producers that brought the songs to life."
6) What can we expect from your live shows?
"Me, with the band in a black jumpsuit singing my socks off and also chatting nonsense in between songs about what I had for dinner that night."
7) What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
"I probably would have to say getting my song 'Lying to Yourself' played on Love Island this year. My friends went crazy."
8) Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
"I'm obsessed with BBC crime dramas, no lie. I was in the studio once and I once bumped into Suranne Jones from my favourite BBC crime drama Scott and Bailey. I love her."
9) What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
"The Black Keys, A Tribe Called Quest, Slaves."
10) When can we see you live?
"Festivals - I will deffo be there. In the meantime come to my music night More Moore at Mau Mau on Portobello Road. I sing and so do other people I think are cool so yeah catch me there!"
