Get to Know: Misunderstood
We caught up with the exciting new act to find out a little bit more about them and their music...
This week's featured artist is an incredible new duo from the UK.
Misunderstood have spent the past few years establishing themselves as one of the UK's most promising new acts. From their debut single 'Trouble' to their latest hit 'Ghetto Style', Jeff and Steph never fail to showcase their personalities in their music.
We were lucky enough to catch up with the rising stars this week.
Check it out below...
1) For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
Jeff: We are called Misunderstood. We are two fun, creative and loud guys from London who love to eat food, write songs and perform. (LOL)
Steph: We’re comfortable in our skin and we want everyone else in the world to be, and we try to convey that in our music.
2) Describe your sound in three words…
Steph: I would say Empowering and Energetic
Jeff: Umm….Fresh!
3) Who inspired you to start a career in music?
Jeff: From the get-go, it was Michael Jackson. Moonwalker the movie was just played non stop in my house and I feel like I really identified with it. After that, I knew I wanted to be a musician when I grew up.
Steph: For me, it was my mother and my grandma. They were the only women in my life that were strong, and they really encouraged me to do what I wanted to do because they didn’t get the chance to do what they wanted to do in life.
4) Who are your biggest musical influences?
Steph: I would say Justin Timberlake because he’s just sick, Missy Elliott because her music videos were out of this world. Brandy because of her vocals, P!nk and obviously Beyoncé.
Jeff: Growing up it was Michael Jackson, obviously, and I’d say Destiny’s Child, Usher and basically all 90’s music.
5) Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new music…
Jeff: We didn’t want to just come out with an album that was generic. We really delved into our personalities and created characters to help bring to life the vibes and more of the story.
Steph: The whole album is about celebrating and empowering all types of women. 'Ghetto Style' really celebrates the Ghetto fabulous women of the world that are often slated in the media but we wanna show that there’s beauty in all types of women.
6) What can we expect from your live shows?
Jeff: We love the element of surprise, so we won’t say too much but just expect the unexpected…
Steph: ...and vocals for dayssss.
7) What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Jeff: I don’t know if this is considered a career highlight but I would say doing all the things we’ve been able to do and seeing the positive reaction we’ve had, even though a lot of people told us it wasn’t possible.
Steph: Like most artists, we have faced some rejection. The way I see it is that so many of the greats have been rejected and have had to keep trying and trying till they make it, and it’s really only until you fully believe in your vision that people back you. Now that’s starting to happen and man are we ready!!
8) Have you met anyone and been totally Starstruck?
Steph: BEYONCÉ!
Jeff: Oh my god that was ridiculous! The fact that will.i.am introduced us was even crazier.
9) What’s on your iPod/playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
Jeff: Oh my god, we are gonna get grilled! On my playlists it’s going to have to be Backstreet Boys 'I Want It That Way' and Spice Girls 'Say You’ll Be There'. Those songs are bangers!!
Steph: I’m a big fan of musical theatre! I love pop but these two songs I really connect with in a different way, and that’s why I find myself listening to them over and over again! Matilda the Musical, 'Quiet' and Annie, 'It’s the Hardknock Life'.
10) When can we see you live?
Jeff: We have a show on November 28th at The Curtain Club in Shoreditch! It’s gonna be lit!
Steph: You can get your tickets from LiveNation now – bring your brother, your sister, your friends, your dog, your cat, your grandma – we want EVERYONE to come!! It’s gonna be sick!!!
