Demi Lovato has discussed her upcoming role on hit US show Glee, saying that she hopes her character will inspire others.

The X Factor USA judge has been [uuid=7cc51a8c-95ae-4360-849b-3f60d49bbf02]signed up for a multi-episode arc[/uuid] in season five of the musical drama, as Santana's love interest.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, she said: "I get to play a lesbian on the show and that's something that I feel like hasn't really been brought to primetime with, you know, a young actress.

"And I think it represents where our society is today. It's becoming the norm and I'm really glad that I get to represent that - how far we've come."

The Heart Attack singer went on: "You know, 15 years ago you wouldn't have seen that on TV, but now people are becoming more comfortable with it and I'm glad that I get to represent that, and also, just hopefully inspire people with my character to love who they are and accept who they are and not give a c**p what other people think."

Lovato added that she has enjoyed working with her friends in the cast, and praised 21-year-old Lea Michele, who [uuid=e3c57e07-6b9c-46f6-8804-7e08660bc512]returned to the set[/uuid] soon after the tragic death of her boyfriend and co-star Cory Monteith.

"She's great," Demi said. "She's such a strong woman and I'm so proud of her. Love her so much."

The new series of Glee begins in the US on 26 September, with the show to be broadcast by Sky1 in the UK within seven days of the US premiere.
