One-Hit Wonders We Wish We’d Heard More Of
By Tamara Roper
Did you know that Thursday 25th September is National One-Hit Wonder Day? Nope, us neither, but any excuse to fall down a YouTube hole of songs that saw the light of day ten years ago is good enough for us.
'Here Comes The Hotstepper' - Ini Kamoze
Worth wanting a follow up for the video potential alone, ‘Here Comes The Hotstepper’ is addictive. Look at how much of a boss Ini Kamoze is! Shades or no shades, his facial expression the whole way through this screams, "I got it!". Does it matter that he’s wearing a string vest? Definitely not.
'Do U Really Like It?' -DJ Pied Piper
The biggest selling garage track in music history, 'Do U Really Like It?' signified the line being drawn under what had been an explosive time in UK music. Chances are you’ll hear it out this weekend, so maybe it’s not such a shame DJ Pied Piper never brought out a follow-up.
'Babycakes' -3 Of A Kind
3 Of A Kind were about four years too late for their messy 2-step to seem like anything more than an anomaly in the charts. Regardless, they’re probably still dining off the spoils of their disgustingly sweet pop-garage banger that went straight to number one in 2004.
'Jump Around' - House Of Pain
Home to probably the most recognisable horn intro in popular music, nobody really knows what came before or after it, or indeedwho House Of Pain really are. One of them went on to join Linkin Park, one of them went off to pursue a wildly unsuccessful solo career. Should have just stayed together and ploughed on with it, really.
'Somebody That I Used To Know' -Gotye
Gotye is the ultimate somebody that we used to know. This track, which now has 550 million hits on YouTube BTW, led to hours of radio play, a spawn of successful covers, and heck even a well-rounded career for guest vocalist Kimbra. Gotye, however, released a relatively boring album and was never seen again.
