UK Release Date: July 31
Running Time: 122mins
Director: James Gunn
Plot: Quill (Pratt) aka “Starlord” steals a mysteriously powerful orb from an alien planet which then gets stolen from him by Ronan The Accuser (Pace) who wants to use the orb’s mysterious power to destroy the planet Xandar and all Xandarians. Quill assembles a motley crew of cosmic mercenaries including Gamora (Saldana) a green lady badass, Rocket (Cooper) a mega-clever but irritable raccoon, Groot (Diesel) a tree-man thingy and Drax (Bautista) a muscular brawler with a brilliant vocabulary. Together this band of rogues generally josh and rally together to save the Galaxy from an almost certain BOOM!Best Scene: When Ronan’s big black Kree spaceship descends into Xandar’s atmosphere like a big black yum-yum, Nova Corp and the Ravagers’ spaceships take to the skies to engage in a spectacular CG dogfight with the evil Kree air force. It’s like Top Gun, in space, but without an unnecessarily homoerotic volleyball scene.
Best One Liner: “I am Groot,” says… Groot.
Date Movie or Mate Movie: The big, universal theme of Guardians Of The Galaxy is friendship. Yet despite Quill and Rocket and Drax all wanting to kill each other regularly during the film, friendship saves the galaxy in the end… Therefore: Mate Movie.
Scene Stealer: In a movie chock-a-blocked with sumptuous CGI and sexy VFX the scene stealer is Quill’s very retro 1970s Sony Walkman that he uses to blast out the most Awesome Mix of 1970s disco and soft-rock hits.WTF Moment: The final showdown between the cosmic a-hole Ronan holding his very big planet smashing mega hammer and a very human Quill, who doesn’t hold any superhuman superpowers at all. With the galaxy’s fate in his hands he decides to try saving the day by pulling out some killer dance moves and tries nailing a-wholly baffled Ronan in an old-skool dance off.
Summary: Marvel’s latest installment to their vast movie world is like watching the sun go supernova and turn into a great big ball of burning FUN! This movie is half intergalactic sci-fi adventure and half wise-cracking slapstick comedy. And it’s a whole lot of popcorn entertainment! Pratt plays the anti-hero, savior of the galaxy with jerk-like gusto. Bradley Cooper makes a star turn as Rocket, the ill-tempered foul-mouthed space rodent. And Groot is a tree everyone, not just hippies, would want to hug. All round this movie is 122 well spent minutes of total enjoyment and geeky good times.
