Harry Styles Responds To Zayn Malik's Criticism Of One Direction And Defends Teenage Girl Fans

What a guy.

While the world waits for Harry Styles'solo album to drop, he's opened up about his perspective on Zayn Malik's decision to leave One Direction, and has also leapt to the defense of teenage girls who are widely and unfairly slated for valuing pop music.

In an in-depth interview withRolling Stone, Harry was fed the following quote from Zayn Malik about his appreciation of "cool" music: "[1D is] not music that I would listen to. If I was sat at a dinner date with a girl, I would play some cool shit, you know what I mean? I want to make music that I think is cool shit. I don't think that's too much to ask for."

Responding to the quote, Harry insistedhe wants nothing but the best for his old bandmate, saying:"I think it's a shame he felt that way, but I never wish anything but luck to anyone doing what they love. If you're not enjoying something and need to do something else, you absolutely should do that. I'm glad he's doing what he likes, and good luck to him."

Elsewhere in the interview, Harry argued that he doesn't feel any pressure to become more 'credible' in the eyes of critics, saying that the trend of bashing young women'stastes just because they're young women is the worst kind of music snobbery.

Defending the teenage fans who have supported him so far in his career, Harry said:"Who's to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy? That's not up to you to say. Music is something that's always changing. There's no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they're not serious?

Making a seriously good point about the power of teen fans, he added: "How can you say young girls don't get it? They're our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going. Teenage-girl fans – they don't lie. If they like you, they'rethere. They don't act 'too cool.' They like you, and they tell you. Which is sick."

Hear, hear.
