We Spoke To The Author Behind The Award Winning Fan-Fic That Puts Harry Styles In A Dystopian Future
And yes, it is as amazing as it sounds.
The Hunger Games meets The Road… meets Harry Styles. Truly the stuff dreams are made of. For one young writer though this is just one of the many weird and wonderful ideas allowing millions of readers a glimpse into fictional worlds that could only previously have been wistfully imagined.
Meet Megan De Vos, aka Styleslegend – One Direction fan, award winning writer and Wattpad megastar. Wattpad, if you haven’t discovered its joys yet, is an online community of writers where anyone can post their work, and anyone can read it. For the past three years or so, Megan has been writing imaginative, engrossing Harry Styles fanfiction on Wattpad and has since gained a readership of over 50 million on her stories such as ‘Anarchy’, ‘Always’ (based around Harry’s ‘Marcel’ character in the ‘Best Song Ever’ video) and ‘Resolution’. We caught up with her to hear the story behind the stories:
On starting out:
“I originally started on Wattpad as a reader of fanfictions, like many others on the site, because I was and continue to be a massive fan of One Direction. One day, I was hoping to find a certain type of story to read but couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I decided to try my hand at writing it myself.
After sharing the beginnings of my first story with a friend and receiving positive feedback, I decided to post it on Wattpad. This is how my first story, ‘Always’, was born.”
“I feel that he is such a wonderful muse with a multidimensional personality that makes for a very pliable lead. He possesses many facets that allow me to shape him into whatever my mind comes up with. And, of course, I enjoy writing about him for the same reason I enjoyed reading about him: I’m simply a fan.”
Did you ever expect to get so many readers?
“I never expected anything to happen with my story. I had seen some authors gain huge followings and couldn’t even wrap my mind around that. Needless to say, I was shocked when my story started gaining a little momentum. I started to notice people commenting, voting, and following me.
People started telling me how much they loved my story and how a book had never made them feel such a way before. It was then that I started to realize how much I truly loved writing, not only because I enjoy writing in and of itself, but because it allows me to connect with people in such a special way. It is an incredible feeling to know that in some small way, I can make someone happy simply with the words I write.”
What are they all about?
“My most popular stories are, arguably, ‘Anarchy’ and its sequel, ‘Anarchy: Annihilation’. The plot mainly revolves around two people, Harry and Grace, as they try to survive in a dystopian world where society has been destroyed.
Though both exist in the same desolate circumstances where people live in camps surrounding the shattered remains of London, they have been raised as enemies, rivals in the desperate fight for survival. When Grace finds herself with no choice but to return to Harry’s camp, things get tricky as they begin to develop feelings for each other that complicate their lives in every way imaginable. I chose to write such a story because I have always been a huge fan of dystopian novels as well as romance novels, but had never really read one that seemed to be equal parts of each, as most tend to be heavier on one side than the other.
I loved the idea of a book taking place in such a harsh, unforgiving world that somehow managed to allow love to develop and flourish in a beautiful way. ‘Anarchy’ and ‘Anarchy: Annihilation’ are difficult to fit into one genre, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
“The best advice I can share is to write something that you would want to read, because that’s how I got started. I’d also suggest writing because you love it, not because you want to gain a massive following. If you love to write and are willing to dedicate time and effort to your story, it will show in your work. And finally, planning and editing go a long way in terms of the making sure the conventional quality of your story is as high as possible. There are so many things that can help out a new writer, but these are things I can say have helped me along the way.”
