For nearly two decades, High Contrast has been at the forefront of drum & bass. We can't tell you how much we had his remix of Adele 'Hometown Glory' on repeat when it first surfaced. Immense.
Now, exploring new genres, evident in his recent single, the stomping 'Shotgun Mouthwash' from his forthcoming sixth album Night Gallery, (and the T2: Trainspotting soundtrack), the DJ/producer will be showing off his new edge in a debut headline live performance at London's Electric Brixton on 18th March.
In anticipation, High Contrast - aka Lincoln Barratt - has picked us out 10 of his favourite ever songs spanning Jamie xx, Method Man, Adam F and more...
Jamie xx - 'Gosh'
"A hauntingly emotional ode to UK rave music, this also has probably the best music video of the century."
Charlotte Gainsbourg Ft. Beck - 'Heaven Can Wait'
"Saying that, this is maybe the second best video of the century. An incredible procession of surreal imagery that somehow fits the song, at least to me."
Tame Impala - 'Solitude Is Bliss'
"Another great video with touch of dark surrealism, I've been into Tame Impala since their early days so it's great to see them doing so well now."
Adam F - 'Circles'
"One of the first DnB tunes I ever heard and it really got me into the music. Still a track that inspires me to this day."
Cassius - 'Cassius 1999'
"Another huge influence on my own music, this track made want to go and sample old 70s soul vinyl."
Method Man Ft. Mary J. Blige - 'You're All I Need To Get By'
"The first hip-hop tune I ever bought. Also got me thinking about taking vocals from old soul records and using them in a new way."
Queens Of The Stone Age - 'No One Knows'
"Probably my favourite rock record, I did an bootleg remix of this track so I can play it in my DnB DJ sets."
Tyler The Creator - 'Yonkers'
"I generally prefer narrative videos to performance ones but this was such an original take on doing a performance in a video, espeically for a hip-hop song, that it really stood out and got Tyler a lot of attention, being the perfect visual for his darkly humourous style."
Baauer - 'Gogo!'
"A great idea for a video, taken to the extreme and brilliantly executed. Few vieos manage to be such an emotional journey. Song bangs too."
Gesaffelstein - 'Pursuit'
"A mysterious and hypnotic video that feels like it's about something but is very hard to nail down what exactly, which is a great way of making you watch it again and again."
High Contrast’s 'Shotgun Mouthwash' is out now on 3 Beat. He plays live at Electric Brixton on 18th March.
