Ian McKellen Visits University, Drops Best Gandalf Reference Ever
YOU. SHALL. NOT. PASS!
Make no bones about it, Sir Ian McKellen is the wizarding Godfather we all wish we had.
He’s the sort of gent who’d come round to your house unannounced, laden with presents and great stories, and leave having made you feel enriched and ready to conquer the rest of your life with an extra shot of berocca in your lungs.
Which is probably why Oxford University hauled him in to add a bit of va va voom to their probably overworked and underslept student cohort. In a video that’s popped up on YouTube, Sir Ian is speaking to a hall of students, who know exactly what’s coming when he says “if you don’t work hard, if you don’t do your revision…”
McKellan is a straight up PRO. The man’s been having to wheel out that line since pretty much the dawn of time, but he does it with such vigour you’d have thought it was the first time. Rick Collins, who was in the audience gave MTV a little flavour of what it was like to be in the company of the Grey one. "He did his talk mainly on his work with Stonewall and took various questions both from the president of the union and people in the audience...Afterwards he went outside to chat to the people waiting and said "I'm sorry you can't get in, but the fact is you see, You shall not pass!""
Gandalf, we tip our hats and bow to you, as we silently plot to get your knighthood upgraded. #gandalf4king
