Paramore Pump Out The Hits At iTunes Festival 2013
REVIEW: The rockers keep their fans on their feet at The Roundhouse…
Thursday, September 5, 2013 - 00:13
Paramore brought their unique brand of high-energy pop-rock to the Roundhouse in Camden tonight as the fourth headline act to hit the stage at the 2013 iTunes Festival. Support act Fenech-Soler set the scene with a bunch of electro pop-rock gems, before the screens began the countdown to the main event...
Feeling: The crowd was humming with anticipation ahead of Paramore's set. While the venue never quite felt full to capacity, those in attendance seemed to know every line to every track - and they definitely weren't shy about singing along. Simple staging and low-key lighting effects meant the music stayed centre stage.
The Look: Hayley Williams, sporting her new, sleek, fiery-red bob, wore a black crop top with white PVC overlay teamed with a pair of long red shorts over black leggings. Her black sports shoes certainly got a work out, as the pint-sized star ran around the stage for the best part of the night. The boys rocked their standard dark skinny jeans, with Jeremy Davis in a red tee and leather vest and Taylor York in a short-sleeved black button down.
Tunes: The band opened proceedings with Grow Up before ripping into a set that struck a good balance of old and new, with fresh material from their self-titled LP such as Fast In My Car, Last Hope and Now peppered with several fan favourites.
Highlights included the rockers' debut single Misery Business which had the whole venue fist pumping and throwing the horns up, The Only Exception where the crowd sang loud and proud as one, and of course their latest smash Still Into You. Working a cover of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide into In The Mourning was also a nice touch.
Banter: Hayley carried the show in terms of the band's interaction with the fans, with Jeremy and Taylor staying mum for the full 90 minutes. Williams more than made up for it though, hooking in the crowd with some call and response during the songs and thanking the fans for "making it so special."
The singer even made mention of Paramore's much-publicised line-up change, saying: "We've been through some stupid stuff, some ups and downs … the fighting and the struggle makes it all the more worth it."
Special Guests: Alice! By the looks of things, front woman Hayley made this fan's year (or is that life?) by pulling her out of the crowd for a Misery Business sing-a-long. She bounced around the stage like a pro and would have made even the biggest cynic crack a smile.
Sweat Factor: As always Williams was a total pocket rocket, running around the stage and keeping her fans engaged for the full hour and a half set. Jeremy and Taylor did their bit too, even throwing in a double-act flip for good measure.
Summary: A passionate set from start to finish with a few well-placed reflective moments dotted throughout. Hayley has boundless energy and the vocal talents to match, and the band put on a show that can only have left every fan walking out the doors feeling satisfied and looking forward to Paramore’s next trip to our shores.
