Jack Whitehall Wades Into Dapper Laughs Debate
Star says ITV should answer questions about controversial show...
The comedian has suggested that it should have been broadcaster ITV appearing on Newsnight to answer questions about the controversial comic instead of the man himself.
Daniel O'Reilly announced on Newsnight that he was retiring the laddish character - after sparking outrage with a rape joke at a live gig.
And Whitehall didn't hold back when asked about the story by Digital Spy, saying: "To be honest, I think, yes he should have come out and explained himself, because he's an idiot.
"That's what he is, a really stupid little man. But the people who should be on Newsnight and answering the questions are whoever put him on TV - whoever saw those Vines and thought, 'Let's put this guy on TV'.
"He's a stupid guy. I don't think he genuinely understood how wrong what he was saying was. But it shouldn't have got to that stage, should it?"
Surprisingly, he went on to reveal that he's working with the broadcaster himself.
"I've got a series coming on ITV2 next year. It's got great people involved, great producers, great people at the channel - they've got some great comedy commissioners who have helped bring it to the screen.
"But then they've lumped it in with (Dapper Laughs). It's a bit unfair on other shows on the channel."
And the Fresh Meat star said he had no time for the argument that O'Reilly was only playing a character.
"It doesn't excuse what you say," he insisted. "All comedians are characters. We're all playing different people. I play Jack Whitehall on stage, it's not the real me. But you're still responsible for what you say."
