Get to Know: Jade Bird
We caught up with the exciting new artist to find out a little bit more about her and her music...
This week's featured artist is an incredible new singer-songwriter from the UK.
Jade Bird's career has gotten off to an amazing start. She moved to London aged 16 to pursue a career in music and since then she has established herself as one of the UK's most promising new acts. She even features on the BBC Sound of 2018 longlist.
We were lucky enough to catch up with the 23-year-old this week.
Check it out below...
1) For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
I am a fully-grown human. 20 years old, from the UK (I’ve moved around a lot) but am now living in London.
2) Describe your sound in three words…
Feisty, acoustic-driven pop (is that 4 words?! *panics*)
3) Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new music…
The process is quite natural, I always start with a word or melody that inspires a concept, then sit down and piece the song together - sometimes it starts from the chorus like my song “Lottery” and sometimes from the verse like “What Am I Here For”. I then take it to my producer in upstate NYC and we work out what the song needs. Track it with the musicians live and build from that foundation really.
4) What can we expect from your live shows?
A lot of fun, I tend to tell a few jokes in between the heart wrenchers - you know, to keep things from getting too sad ;)
5) What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Probably a mixture of getting on the BBC Sound Poll 2018 - that was an unexpected honour - and playing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the US last year. It was the most surreal experience, my grandma and mum were in the crowd too - so it was pretty special.
6) What’s on your iPod/playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
A lot! Specifically a lot of Radiohead. They have such a catalogue of incredible songs you can’t get bored. “Hole” - I live through this album. Quite a bit of jazz too. Oscar Peterson's 'Night Train' is on repeat right now.
7) When can we see you live?
In the U.K. you can catch me on my first headline tour in March! I’ll be in the USA for SXSW in March and I’m doing festivals all over the place throughout the year. Check out my website for all the info!

We stayed in long before Ferdinand Street
We spent five talking about our lives
But we'd talked like that about a thousand times
And I'm bored of all that
You used to tell me that love is a lottery and
You got your numbers and you're bettin' on me
You used to say that love is a game, but
You got your numbers and you're bettin' on me
I'll tell you about a guy that
I've been with, you ask how
"Old is he?," and I laugh, "26, no but–"
He's 30!
How messed up is that?
"Won't forget it" he says "I'm a jealous man and I don't want to talk about that"
You used to tell me that love is a lottery, but
You got your numbers and you're bettin' on me
You used to say that love is a game, but
You got your numbers and you're bettin' on me
You're still bettin' on me
Hold on, my dear hold on real tight
It's just a numbers game in my mind
And we've been here
A thousand times, a thousand times, a thousand...
You used to tell me that love is a lottery, but
You got your numbers and you're bettin' on me
You used to say that love is a game, but
You got your numbers and you'll play it any way
You used to tell me that love is a lottery, but
You got your numbers and you're bettin' on me
You used to tell me that
Love is a lottery, but
You got your numbers and you're bettin' on me
Are you still bettin' on me?
