James Franco Defends His Semi-Naked Selfies
Star claims that he's only giving his Instagram followers what they want...
James Franco has spoken out to defend his recent spate of near-naked selfies on social media.
The 36-year-old actor - who also likes to dabble in writing, painting and performance art - got onto the subject of his selfies during an appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman.
He said: "There's a lot to get straight here and I don't know if we even have time. To me it's a fun thing, it's the sort of thing I don't put a lot of thought into, but it gets a lot of attention. I have a lot of followers on Instagram.
"It's not like I'm putting that on billboards. I sensibly Instagrammed it for my fans, now the bloggers are following me on there. So they'll just take it and use my images for whatever they want."
Letterman replied: "You will be the first to admit, looking objectively, it's provocative."
And Franco answered: "I didn't ask you to look at it, it's what the people want. You don't want to see it, don't follow me. Don't follow me on Instagram."
Asked about a particularly risque selfie showing himself with his hand down his pants, he drew a comparison with David Beckham's boxer shorts billboard adverts.
"That's a special one. I got in trouble for that one, and I took it down. People didn't like it. I guess I look so scary in it.
"But why is that any worse than David Beckham on the billboard, showing his bulge?
"It's context, like that Britney Spears head shaved moment, where it's sort of like, 'alright you want me, here you can have me, but I'm going to be really ugly'.
"You know what I mean?"
Franco has more than two million followers on Instagram.
