Jared Leto Wins Best Supporting Actor Oscar 2014!
Jared Leto has won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club.
He beat out fellow nominees Bradley Cooper, Jonah Hill, Barkhad Abdi and Michael Fassbender to the award.
Last year’s Best Supporting Actress winner, Anne Hathaway, presented Leto with the award at the star-studded Hollywood ceremony.
42-year-old Leto found fame as an actor on 1990s television show My So-Called Life before transitioning onto the big screen in films such as Fight Club and American Psycho.
[related]He is also the frontman of rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars, where he plays alongside his brother Shannon Leto.
Leto thanked Shannon and their mother Constance as he accepted the prestigious award.
“In 1971 there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child,” he said in his speech. “She was a high school dropout and a single mom but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children.”
“She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard and to do something special. That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight. I just wanna say, I love you mum and thank you for teaching me to dream.”
The 42-year-old actor added: “To my brother Shannon, the best big brother in the world, you’re a true artist, thank you for sharing this insane, amazing adventure that is Thirty Seconds To Mars and for being my best friend. I love you.”
Among those he also thanked was Dallas Buyers Club co-star Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon’s husband, Hollywood agent Jim Toth.
Leto’s speech also touched on the political troubles in the Ukraine and Venezuela, AIDS and injustice.
