It’s no surprise after announcing earlier this year that he would be shutting down his ready-to-wear collection to focus on haute couture and his perfume business, Jean Paul Gaultier’s last ever prêt-à-porter show - which he staged at Le Grand Rex on Saturday - was the hottest ticket in town. But could anyone have expected Gaultier to create an extravagant Beauty Pageant (appropriately titled Élection de Miss Jean Paul Gaultier 2015), which saw the designer’s most famous work showcased to an audience of peers, including Rick Owens, Jeremy Scott, and Gareth Pugh? Of course! It’s Gaultier, bitches!
Supermodel Coco Rocha competed on the runway, with a painful-looking tumble not usurping her crowning, while a Gaultier paid homage to the fashion editors who have helped him along the way. There were models dressed as Grace Coddington, Emmanuelle Alt, Franca Sozzani and Carine Roitfeld, with Lindsey Wixson taking on a young Suzy Menkes, while an Anna Wintour parody was notably absent. Burn.
