15 OMG Moments From The Hunger Games Movies
All the Katniss feels in one place...
Stop what you're doing. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is finally here! *HYPERVENTILATES*
As Mockingjay - Part 2 marks the end of Katniss, Gale and Peeta's adventure/love triangle (SOBS), it's time to compose yourselves because we're about to relive the BIGGEST, SCARIEST and SADDEST moments from the whole darn thing.
Obvs there are some MAJOR SPOILERS on the emosh road ahead, so don't say we didn't warn you...
The Hunger Games
1. Katniss volunteering in place of Prim
The first massive moment comes early on where our hero - the amazing Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen - volunteers to take her lil sister Prim's (Willow Shields) place. As soon as we hear her name called out by Elizabeth Banks' awesomely-dressed Effie Trinket, we're all like OMG! But Katniss totally steps up and this is the point the story really begins!
2. Peeta disguising himself as a rock/cake
OK, so this isn't meant to be WTF stoopid, but it kinda comes across as silly rather than serious. As Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) tries to hide from the other Hunger Games contestants, he - for some reason - paints his head into a large tree to 'blend in'. We're not quite sure about it because he'd need a good bath afterwards, but it's definitely a memorable part from the first movie.
3. Losing Rue
OH GOD, NO. Do we really have to relive this one?! The most teary moment in the first film (right?), poor little Rue, the cutie Katniss befriends and looks out for, dies. If you don't choke up at this part, we'd seriously question whether you had a heart. All the feels hit us when we're reminded of her death later in the series too. SOMEONE PASS THE TISSUES ALREADY.
4. Wait, they both won?!
Anyone who hasn't read the books will be shocked to see both Katniss and Peeta make it out of the Hunger Games arena ALIVE, but only just. Madness, we tell you. We knew something big was bound to happen, but who could've predicted they'd bump off everyone and then refuse to kill each other? How, erm, romantic.
5. Katniss killed a dude?
At the beginning of Catching Fire, Katniss and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) are doing a bit of hunting, as you do, but as J-Law carefully lines up a deer in her sights and shoots her arrow... OH NO! SHE'S KILLED A GUY! What was he doing there?! Who is he?! Is she going to go to priso--and then we realise she was imagining it. PHEW.
6. Gale getting whipped
Definitely an OMG MAKE IT STOP scene, as we see the hunky beefiness of Gale's sculpted torso ripped to shreds during a public whipping. Ouch. It's almost unbearable to watch, so we're totally grateful when Katniss intervenes and we can all stop wincing.
7. Snow forcing another Hunger Games through
Just when we thought that bearded meanie President Snow (Donald Sutherland) couldn't be any more of a douche, he goes and announces that all victors must enter one ultimate Hunger Games. He can't do that, can he?! Turns out he can, and he does. Come on, just give them a break, yeah?
8. Cinna getting a beat down
Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) is almost too cool for school, but he's not exempt from getting an almighty beat down at the hands of Snow's thugs. This is THE most harrowing scene in CF because it happens as Katniss is about to be shot up into the Hunger Games, and it's just the most horrible thing to witness. Made even more emosh because it's the last time we ever see the stylish Cinna. *wipes eyes*
Mockingjay - Part 1
9. Snow's public execution order
Barely 15 minutes into the first of a two-parter, things step up a notch (or 10) as President Snow gives his "Those who ignore the warnings of history, prepare to pay the ultimate price" speech. We see a load of citizens from various Districts on their knees, cuffed and ready to be shot. The end of Snow's speech followed by mass executions of these 'traitors' is genuinely one of the franchise's biggest OMG shockers. It left us feeling very cold.
10. The obliteration of the hospital in District 8
A massively upsetting scene once Katniss visits the injured and offers them a glimpse of hope. Snow then goes and bombs the hell out of the building. It's devastating, and Katniss cannot contain her emotions and issues the Pres her "Fire is catching! If we burn, you burn with us!" warning.
11. Peeta nearly killing Katniss
SO DISTRESSING. When the team rescue Peeta, Katniss can't wait to reunite with him. Only, he's been brainwashed into hating the living daylights out of her, so (naturally) tries to throttle her instead. Maybe true love is dead after all... It's totally NOT what we're expecting here - we wanted a warm, kissy embrace, but instead we're left watching the most horrific attempted murder.
Mockingjay - Part 2 (SERIOUSLY, THIS IS SPOILER CENTRAL)
12. Katniss getting shot, like, loads
Just as our hero is rallying the troops to fight together against Snow - you go, Katniss! - we're all getting behind her and feeling really positive about life... until some nutter pulls out a gun and shoots her. She falls, and we're left in utter shock. Thankfully she's wearing a bulletproof vest. THANK GOD.
13. The gang being chased through those terrifying tunnels
Without a doubt THE ABSOLUTE SCARIEST moment in all the Hunger Games saga. As the gang are chased through scary tunnels, hordes of mutts (terrifyingly pale, eyeless, beast-like mongrels) racing after them is simply horrific. From the second they appear out of nowhere in front of Lieutenant Jackson, we know everyone's in trouble. And we even lose Finnock in all the fighting. RIP.
14.Prim getting caught in the cross-fire
If you thought losing Rue was tough, then seeing Katniss's adorable sis engulfed in a cloud of parachuting explosions will leave you completely broken. The sisters had been reunited for literally a second and, as they look at one another, suddenly it's all over. WE CANNOT COPE.
15. Julianne Moore snuffing it
Just when we thought that - after all the crap Katniss has endured over four flippin' films - Snow was gonna get it, she turns her trusty bow to new (and ever so slightly evil) President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore). WHAT THE HECK?!
Well, it does kinda make sense, as it's for the good of Panem and everybody living there. Still, it's not entirely expected that she'd murder the very person who made Katniss an icon, but J-Law knows best.
And with that we're all OMG'd out. It's been totes emotional but we now need to go and lie down...
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is in cinemas from 19th November.
