Jessica Simpson has covered a song called Let Him Fly which will be the closing track on her new album A Public Affair.

The singer says she listened to the tune, by US folk singer Patti Griffin, with her sister Ashlee Simpson over Christmas - just after she split from husband Nick Lachey.

"We laid there listening to the song and just cried and cried like babies," Jessica told our US colleagues at MTV.com.

"The song is about how sometimes you just have to know when to let something go. And that was that moment. And I had to sing it."

The new album A Public Affair is released on August 28.

Despite its name Jess says the new record is not about the break-up of her marriage.

"It's about me going out with my girlfriends and forgetting the paparazzi and just having a fun night."
