The Changing (Glorious) Facial Hair Of Joaquin Phoenix

With Inherent Vice about to hit cinemas, we run through Mr Phoenix's most impressive facial fuzz to date...

Joaquin Phoenix is a man of many, many talents. Singing, dancing, acting and being generally ridonkulously handsome, we here at MTV are quite the fans.

Which is why we're so excited about Inherent Vice, the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel.

Set during the tail end of the psychedelic ‘60s, Joaquin Phoenix stars as private eye Doc Sportello, whose eccentric personality is matched only by his impressive mutton chops.

To celebrate the release of Inherent Vice on January 30th, we take a look at Phoenix’s incredible facial hair throughout the years.

An early role for Phoenix as high school student Jimmy Emmett in To Die For (1995).

As Lewis McBride in Return To Paradise (1998).

Playing the seedy Max California in 8MM (1999), complete with blue hair and facial scruff.

Playing Ethan Learner in Reservation Road (2008).
