Joey Bada$$ Calls For Modern Day Civil Rights Leaders In The Wake Of Ferguson Shootings
In an interview for MTV Voices, the rapper speaks of the need for leaders...
We sat down with rapper Joey Bada$$ to chat about his new album, as well as a few burning topics of the day. Most notably, the public outrage and uprisings in the US after the result of the Ferguson shooting trial.
“In today’s society we don’t have as [many] civil right leaders as we used to. Back in the day, a civil rights leader would come on television, and he would be well known. They’d be like the President.”
Does this mean we’re going to see the rise of Joey Bada$$ the modern day revolutionary? His track ‘Christ Conscious’ certainly indicates that he’s focused on change.
Moving on to talk about the reaction in the States to the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Joey counts himself “lucky” to have been able to be in the UK “whilst all of the madness” was going on.
Using it to reiterate his point: “more people should take the lead right now. The people who have the most money and the most stature in the music game are being the most silent; it’s kind of weird. Right now we need leaders. We do”
