Life Envy Interview | Joey Bada$$ Reveals What He Can’t Live Without
Take a trip inside the world of Joey Bada$$
Since Joey Bada$$ dropped the mixtape '1999' in 2012 he's been on the radar of hip-hop heads the world over, and with his debut full-length due later this year the so-young-it's-not-even-fair Brooklyn-born rapper is only going higher. But how does one of the most hyped hip-hop artists of the past few years live his day-to-day life and what would he do if he had the chance?
District MTV: Where did you last go on vacation?
Joey Bada$$: The last time was Florida in 2010 – a little hotel stay to get me out of the city. I've enjoyed my work travels, this is my third time in London but it's the first time I've got to chill here. On the way here we saw Big Ben and where the Queen stays, and I was in Soho yesterday which was cool. I love the architecture here, it's dope as hell.
DMTV: What was the last really good film you watched?
Joey: I recently watched King Of New York and that was dope. The whole story of Frank White and the infamous drug cartel in New York, man. I love it.
DMTV: Which TV series are you into?
Joey: I'm really into The Boondocks, I'm heavily into it now. I was into Breaking Bad too but I fell off – it just started losing it for me. I've still not seen the end and everyone gives me the same reaction when I tell them but I just can't bring myself to spend that many hours a day watching it any more.
DMTV: What album can you always listen to?
Joey: Discover by Daft Punk. It's got two of my favourite cuts – Voyager and Something About Us. I could be in any mood and I'd still put that record on and it'll be alright.
DMTV: Favourite place to write?
Joey: I'm a spontaneous guy when it comes to my writing process. It could be anywhere from under a tree in the park to a balcony or just in the corner of a room – it varies a lot. I don't like to use the same tactic twice because I expect every song to sound different, so I need a different vibe.
DMTV: What do you have for breakfast?
Joey: Nothing. My stomach feasts on the remains of the last meal before morning. I usually skip breakfast which I know isn't good, but there's a lot of things I can't stomach in the morning. When I brush my teeth the toothpaste turns my stomach and I can't eat anything.
DMTV: What are you currently reading?
Joey: I read a lot of things at once, I can't read one book at a time so I can always go back to them. My favourite is probably The Seven Spiritual Laws Of Success by Deepak Chopra – it's dope. It gives you a chance to understand your inner self and tells you to connect and how to go about being successful in your daily life.
DMTV: What's your most embarrassing moment?
Joey: I was doing a show in Whistler, Canada and I'd just come off the stage. I was walking to the crowd but I was a little tipsy and there was a speaker, but it was a low speaker so I didn't see it, and I just fell eat-shit-face-first into fans and shit. They were cracking up and but I tried to act like it was nothing but that paining, though.
DMTV: How do you relax?
Joey: Meditation. Subconsciously you always meditate but when I turned a certain age and started connecting with certain people I was drawn into it way more. I definitely understand a lot about myself from doing it. I know some people can't focus themselves to sit silently, I told my cousins to give it a try and they're like "I tried doing this shit but nothing happens!" And I tell them that's the point. I meditate to balance out all the technology going on around me, it's so easy to get lost in your phone.
DMTV: What would you be doing if you weren't a rapper?
Joey: I'd be in NBA. My mind is so strong that anything I put all my focus into I will be. If it wasn't for rap all my focus would be into sport and I would be an athlete. I'm 6'2", I'm definitely shooting that three point, man!
DMTV: What's in your refrigerator?
Joey: Nothing, I'm starving! I'm serious. I mostly eat out. There's a restaurant in my neighbourhood called C&Js, it's a West Indian restaurant and they serve Caribbean food from the islands.
DMTV: How would you spend $1million?
Joey: Invest right away. I'd buy some cribs and generate some revenue. I'd definitely buy a car though, but not a Lambo or anything like that.
DMTV: What is your dream car?
Joey: A nice Jeep with off-road tyres. A 4x4 Grand Cherokee, that's my dream right there. I see a sports car down but the line but I'm all about a big off-road truck.
DMTV: What can't you live without?
Joey: Music. I'm already a crazy man but if someone told me I couldn't have music it would be disastrous.
DMTV: Your favourite item of clothing?
Joey: My cargo pants, I really like cargo pants. I'm not really into Gucci and things like that. Fortunately now I can get things that I like for free so clothing is just about putting stuff on now.
DMTV: The best gift you've ever received?
