John Galliano Is Taking Over Maison Martin Margiela… Now How’s That Gonna Work?
A minimal design house meets fashion’s ultimate maximalist and we can’t wait for the first collection…
John Galliano is making a spectacular return to fashion, as Women’s Wear Daily confirm he has been appointed creative director at Maison Martin Margiela, one of the most minimalistic design houses in existence. Galliano, a minimalist…? Seems like there could be big change afoot at Margiela.
“Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul,” says Renzo Rosso, president of OTB, the company that controls Margiela.
“John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time — a unique, exceptional couturier for a maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion.
“I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home.”
Galliano, famed for his love of baroque, OTT runway shows and dressing like a pirate, will undoubtedly take Margiela in a totally new direction.
Having lost both his own-name label and head designer position at Christian Dior after drunkenly making anti-Semitic comments in 2011, Galliano took on a temporary residency at Oscar de la Renta in 2013, but this is his first official creative director position since the incident.
An official announcement is expected later today, while Galliano is expected to show his first designs for Maison Martin Margiela in January, during Paris Couture Week.
Perhaps we'll see Kate Moss - who stood by Galliano during the anti-Semitic incident and had him design her wedding dress when she married Jamie Hince - taking to the runway!
