John Lennon To Appear On £5 Coin

The Beatles legend won 92% of public vote…

John Lennon is to appear on a new commemorative £5 coin.

The The Beatles singer scored 92% of the vote, or nearly 28,000 votes in total, well ahead of others on the shortlist such as Jane Austen, John Logie Baird and Walter Raleigh. Lennon will now join William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, Charles Darwin and Florence Nightingale in the series, the BBC reported.

But don’t expect to get the coin as change from your corner store – it will actually cost £44.99 as only 5,000 coins are being issued. A one-off 24-carat gold version has also been created, which will be presented to Lennon’s estate.

A Royal Mint spokesperson paid tribute to the star, who would have turned 70 on 9 October. “It's entirely fitting that John Lennon has been chosen by the public in what would have been his 70th year. The massive proportion of the vote he received shows clearly just how much his untimely death still resonates with the nation.

“He ranks alongside, and even ahead of, some of the greatest names in history and the Royal Mint is proud to commemorate a genuine British legend.”
