Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Michael Mann… Public Enemies is set to be one of the biggest box office hits of 2009 and the first trailer is now online.

The movie is based on notorious 1930s American Gangster John Dillinger, played by Depp, and the efforts to stop him by J Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) and his top agent Melvin Purvis (Bale).

During the depression Dillinger became somewhat of a folk hero and his flashy bank robberies and jailbreaks dominated the American Press.

Bale’s character, Melvin Purvis, is one of the top agents for the Bureau of Investigation, the organisation that went on to become the FBI. Purvis heads up a team assigned to track Dillinger down.

Dillinger gained the nickname ‘Jackrabbit’ for flamboyant movements during bank heists, such as leaping over counters and narrow getaways from police, acts that he is supposedly learnt from movies.

Public Enemies is scheduled for release in July.
