Introducing: JP Cooper

The Manchester born crooner dropped into MTV to introduce himself…

Who: J P Cooper. The JP stands for John Paul (very biblical), but JP’s dropped them and goes with his initials. He’s old in the game- making music and gigging for “probably about twelve years”. His break came just at the right time.

Where: Manchester born and bred, JP comes from a city that’s always had a rich heritage of music. “Manchester’s got a lot of talent, but it’s still small enough to make a footprint quite quickly”. Expect to see him down south a bit more though, seeing as he records music here.

What: Good question. JP identifies with soul music enormously, though “being a white guy with dreads” ended up with him being pigeonholed. He started off playing in rock bands, but moved towards a more soulful sound. “I found a community gospel choir, full of people from different backgrounds”. JP’s since played at legendary jazz club at Ronnie Scotts and been on tour with legendary singer Angie Stone.

Who Else?: JP’s been featured on some pretty interesting guest spots, including tracks with rising stars George The Poet and Nick Brewer. JP’s thoughts on collaborations are philosophical: “It’s not a case of ‘they’re doing really well’, it’s a case of thinking that we could create something really beautiful and special”.

Check out his though provoking track wth Nick Brewer ‘Miss Online Superstar’ below.

What’s Next: JP is working on a new album, to be released on Island Records, in the next few months. Winter will no doubt be a great time to keep an eye out on his releases and new work, and you can catch him playing with George The Poet, whose words run deeper than most, on the 13th of October at The Scala. Tickets can be bought here.
