Justice Interview

The French duo talk Michael Jackson, kids choirs and colossal electro hit We Are Your Friends

Justice are Parisian pair Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Auge whove been rocking dancefloors for the past two years.

Theyre famed for riotous DJ sets at clubs around the world and their debut may just be the best house album since Daft Punks Homework.

Justices remix of Simians We Are Your Friends was their first underground club hit that eventually won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Video. Pissing off Kanye West in the process.

Xavier revealed to us that the track was only the second they had made: We made a track for a friends label compilation first, 3 weeks after we were looking for an excuse to make more music and we found the contest to remix Simians We Are Your Friends.

We tried to make it a pop song. We love techno for the energy when we are DJing but 99% of the music we listen to is pop, he said.

After making the track The French men were soon snapped up by the currently uber-trendy label Ed Banger. Its a weird family, said Xavier. We are really free to decide everything about Justice. Its the best luxury.

Xavier and Gaspards debut LP has variously been called cross and dagger because of its logo name. Whats unequivocal is that its a banging rollercoaster of electro sounds.

The idea for the album was to make a 2007 disco opera, Xavier told MTV. Its got a big intro, then we alternate soft moments with really hard moments.

Justices record ranges from the techno assault of Waters Of Nazereth to the poetic Lets Party, which features the brilliant Uffie. Current single D.A.N.C.E though is simply a goodtime hit.

Its a defence of Michael Jackson and its not ironic at all, said Paris man Xavier. We wanted it to be an emotional pop song.

The duo came to London to find a childrens choir to sing on it: Its sung by 8 kids who are 8-12 years old. We picked the less technical kids but the ones who had the most style and attitude.

Over in Britain for a few select dates Xavier says they always enjoy Blighty: We had the best nights at Trash with Erol Alkan and we always love DJing at Fabric.
