The top grossingfilm in that categoryis Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 which earned $119m, according to US box office stats.

The numbers have made Hollywood heavyweights sit and up take notice of the U Smile star’s influence and already insiders are talking about a nomination in the relevant category at next year’s Oscars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Academy voters weren’t just impressed by the documentary but by Justin himself, who met industry insiders at Vanity Fair’s recent Oscars after-party.

"You'd be surprised at the calibre of people who came up to Justin at the Vanity Fair party, most of whom had seen the movie and loved it," a source told the magazine. "There was even talk of putting it up for an Oscar next year in the documentary category. People appreciate that it's not just a kids' movie."

Never Say Never also enjoyed the biggest opening weekend of any documentary in history, overtaking previous front-runner Fahrenheit 9/11 with takings of $29.5m.
