Justin Timberlake Admits Janet Jackson's 'Nipplegate' Was His Fault

But will she join him during his Super Bowl halftime show? That is the question...

As the Super Bowl nears, questions about Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson are only getting louder.

When the 'Filthy' singer announced he would headline this year's halftime show, fans immediately questioned if Janet would appear due to the fact she has reportedly been banned from returning after her 2004 halftime show, where JT joined her.

The story goes that Justin accidentally ripped off part of Janet's costume, exposing her nipple in front of millions around the world, inventing the term 'wardrobe malfunction' and a 5-second delay for all future Super Bowl shows, although Justin has never spoken about what actually happened.

In a new interview with Zane Lowe for Beats 1, JT seemingly admits - for the first time'ever'- that the unplanned incident was his fault, saying "I had my wires crossed."

In other words, he misunderstood the plan and made a major mistake that cost Janet her place at the top of the pop world. However, whileit's taken him 14 years to publicly comment on it, he says him and the pop icon have settled things.

Asked if they have made peace, Timberlake says "Absolutely. And I don’t know that a lot of people know that. I don’t think it’s my job to do that because you value the relationships that you do have with people.”

While there is no mention of Janet performing alongside him, Justin confirmed there won't be a repeat of the controversy this time: "What do you want me to say? We’re not going to do that again!"

14 years on from 'Nipplegate' it would be all kinds of iconic to see Janet Jackson back on that stage to receive the respect she deserves now and did back then.

Justin will perform at the Super Bowl on February 4th, just two days after his fifth album'Man of the Woods'is released.
