Kano Interview

EXCLUSIVE: The London boy tells us about his new record, top rappers and reveals his favourite females.

Kano burst onto the grime scene with his debut album Home Sweet Home in 2005 and crossed over with singles Nite Nite, Typical Me and the killer Ps And Qs.

For his second disc London Town the 22 year old has worked with Damon Albarn, Kate Nash and on new single This Is The Girl Craig David. We sat down and asked him these Essential Questions:

'When did you first realise you could rap?'

Probably as young as 10 I would take songs and just change the lyrics. The first song I did was when I was 15 it was called Party Mode.

'Whats the best track on your new album London Town?'

I like Bust It Up for the energy. I love (title track) London Town because I love performing it live.

But Fighting The Nation is probably the best thing Ive done. The track was influenced by a lot of the killings and shootings that were happening. I thought it would be rude not to speak about it.

' Whos your favourite producer to work with?'

There are two. I love working with Mikey J and Fraser (T Smith) They both inspire me. With Fraser we produce tracks together and he just gives it a different twist.

'Whats been the proudest moment of your career?'

I did enjoy the MOBOs '(where Kano won Best Newcomer)' cos it was the first time I got to bring my family along. That was a proud moment for them.

'Who is the best MC of all time?'

Biggie has definitely stood the test of time. Hes the reason Jay-Z and loads of other rappers are who they are. His flow and wordplay is brilliant- the stories he would tell are just nuts.

'What about your favourite UK rappers?'

Mighty Moe from Heartless Crew- when he was killing it I was just coming up. Im a big fan of D Double E who always used MCing styles that other people werent.

'What has influenced the lyrics on this album?'

The biggest inspiration is the title of the record- London Town. If I wasnt from here I wouldnt be doing what Im doing, everything about the city has influenced me. I couldnt have written the lyrics to this record if I was on a beach in St Tropez.

'Who would your dream collaboration be with?'

Bob Marley- it would be mad but I think we could make it work.

'Who are your dream girls?'

At the moment its gotta be Jessica Alba- I wouldnt kick her out of bed! Beyonce too though.

'Whats your football team?'

Liverpool, though I played for Norwich and Chelsea when I was younger.

'Whos your tip for the top?'

Ghetto is the best on the underground at the moment- hes gonna come through and do the business.

'Tom Thorogood'
