The royal baby Prince George was christened this afternoon at St James' Palace in London.

Crowds gathered outside the palace hoping to catch a glimpse of the three-month-old prince on what was only his second public outing [uuid=ec352dd7-c43f-4120-a974-961d0ed5520b]since his birth on July 22[/uuid].

Prince George was dressed in a long christening robe made of cream lace for the big occasion, while his mother the Duchess of Cambridge donned a similarly coloured ruffled Alexander McQueen jacket and skirt.

Kate Middleton and proud father Prince William were all smiles as they posed for photos with their little one outside the Chapel Royal.

According to the Daily Mail only five senior royals attended the private ceremony - The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry.

The prince, who is third in line to the throne, was baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, in a ceremony that latest around 45 minutes.

Earlier today the names of [uuid=d97871d5-4bea-4289-8edd-2c10965079c2]Prince George's seven godparents[/uuid] were announced.

Breaking with the tradition of choosing fellow royals and foreign dignitaries for the role, Will and Kate instead chose only close friends and family members Oliver Baker, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, Earl Grosvenor, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, William van Cutsem and Zara Tindall.
