Katy Perry Closes iTunes Festival With Knock-Out Set

REVIEW: The pop princess gets Camden's Roundhouse roaring...

On September 1, Lady Gaga kicked off a month of outstanding live performances at Camden’s Roundhouse. Last night (September 30), Katy Perry arrived and closed the 2013 iTunes Festival with a show stopping set of K-Pez pop classics and brand new Prism material.

Feeling: As the crowd counted down the clock for the final time this month, the venue was teeming with anticipation, a little wonder and lot of excitement.

Support acts Iggy Azalea and Icona Pop had already amped up the hundreds of fans and as the white sheet, shrouding the stage dropped the screams were hair-raising.

The Look: Beginning wearing a racy denim/leather/tartan combo Katy mixed fun with sass before changing into a fishnet covered, black, rock chick look for I Kissed A Girl.

For the final push, Perry swapped in an LED-panelled skirt for her Roaring finale. Her male dancers were clad in black dungarees whilst the girls rocked black crop tops and denim hot pants.

A spectrum of colours refracted off the set full of triangular prisms while lasers, smoke and an impressive opening silhouette sequence made the performance a feast for the eyes.

They say some people have tricks up their sleeves but during Wide Awake, Katy somehow managed to create a plume of never-ending confetti from her fingertips leaving people, including us, mouthing “how did she do that?!”

Tunes: Opening with brand new Prism track Walking On Air, a dance-fuelled floor-filler, Katy bowled straight into California Gurls and Teenage Dream. Needless to say her Katy Cats were in the palm of her hand.

A set with almost 50/50 Katy Perry anthems and brand new tracks, classics like Part Of Me, Firework and I Kissed A Girl all hit the spot while the newer jams like Dark Horse and of course Roar, held up to expectation.

Special Guests: Perry’s long-time collaborator and producer Greg Wells joined her on stage for a world exclusive performance of new Prism track By The Grace Of God, a heartfelt ballad, heavily rumoured to be one inspired by ex-husband Russell Brand. We’ll let you listen to that yourselves to make your mind up…

Banter: Continually telling the audience she felt “blessed” throughout the show, Katy let it known Dark Horse was one of “favourite songs on the album” and asked if everyone was “ready to get a little down and dirty” for it. Yes we were.

Celeb Spots: Conor Maynard and Theo from Hurts were spotted in the immediate vicinity, while on Twitter Radio 1’s Scott Mills tweeting his appreciation and Ellie Goulding shared backstage snaps with K-Pez and Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick on Instagram.

Sweat Factor: In a Roundhouse packed to the rafters, Katy’s huge wind turbines kept the leading lady cool, but the same couldn’t be said for the hordes on the floor surging to get the attention of K-Pez.

Summary: Sounding better than ever Katy Perry proved she’s a pure pop princess. The dance moves didn’t hinder the voice and Prism is shaping up to be another success story for the American songstress.

Sharing just 45 minutes of her repertoire left us aching for more but nonetheless the 2013 iTunes Festival was a roaring success. Bring on next year…when we’ll still be figuring out where all the confetti came from…!
