It’s August, which can only mean one thing… the VMAs are coming!

Last week we announced that Katy Perry, one of pop’s biggest superstars, will present the 2017 MTV VMAs and we cannot contain our excitement.

In anticipation of the legendary show, we’re going to take a look at why the ‘Teenage Dream’ singer is the perfect choice to host this year.

SHE’S DONE IT BEFORE

Our favourite ‘California Gurl’ proved her hosting skills are just as impressive as her performances when she hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards two years in a row.

A fresh-faced Katy took over the 2008 EMAs in Liverpool with an ever-changing wardrobe of outlandish costumes, unstoppable energy and a whole lot of tongue-in-cheek.

We loved her so much that she had to return in 2009 to bring the fun to Berlin, where she gave us many hilarious moments. Remember when she (bravely) interrupted Kanye West’s nomination to mock Taylorgate, which happened just months before at the VMAs.

Luckily for Miss Perry, there was no bad blood as West went on to feature on her ‘E.T.’ remix just 2 years later…

SHE’S UNPREDICTABLE

Throughout her career, Perry has always kept fans on their toes as she’s changed her look, style and sound to make every release a proper pop event.

The 'Witness' era has been her most unpredictable thus far, with a dramatic hair change, more experimental music, and a promo strategy that saw her lock herself in a house for 4 days and broadcast it online Big Brother-style for millions to see.

What better time to get her on the VMAs stage? 2017 has proven that she still has plenty of tricks up her sleeves…

SHE’S OUT OF THIS WORLD

One of Katy’s many career highlights - and a personal favourite of mine - was the aforementioned Kanye West collaboration ‘E.T.’

The incredible outer space video, starring model Shaun Ross, saw the singer as an alien travelling to Earth before bringing a robotic Ross to life.

It’s more than enough evidence that she’ll fit right in with this year’s space theme…

SHE’S ALL THAT YOU WANT, BOY

We know that Katy is performing at the show butthe question is: 'what' will she perform?

Although ’Chained to the Rhythm’ is up for three Moon Persons it has been six months since the single was released, meaning she might be more likely to showcase other songs from 'Witness'.

’Bon Appétit’, the criminally underrated bop and second 'Witness' single, hasn’t been performed at an awards show. Plus, its wonderfully weird video is nominated for Best Art Direction, giving her even more reason to perform it.

Really, we just want to see her recreate the visual - long blonde wig, please! - and get back in the boiling pot.

SWISH SWISH, BISH

Trolls have taken a turn on the pop star in recent months and targeted her as a meme in an attempt to bring her down, making the VMAs the perfect opportunity for her to prove haters wrong.

Whatever stunt she pulls or song she performs, this is Katy Perry’s time to be the defiant superstar that she is and blow everyone away.

C’mon, Kathryn! We’re ready for you to kill it.
