What Are ‘Don’t Mind’ Rapper Kent Jones’ Favourite Albums?

Can you guess them? We'll give you a clue: 'T', 'TLOP & 'BR'...

He’s best friends with DJ Khaled and his debut track ‘Don’t Mind’ dominated the airwaves over summer, with its earworm lyrics, “She said "Hola, ¿Cómo estás?” she said "Konnichiwa”/ She said "Pardon my French", I said "Bonjour Madame"” proving impossible to dislodge from memory.Life is pretty good forKent Jones right now.

Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, Kent’s new single, ‘Alright’, which samples Earth, Wind & Fire’s classic ‘Let’s Groove’, is out now. But that sample made us think – ‘hang on a minute… Kent Jones has an 'impeccable' taste in music.’So we invited Kent over to MTV towers to have a chat about his favourite albums. The interview is playing above. But if you prefer reading(anyone? People in 2016 still read, right?) please allow your eyeballs to drift downwards.

'Thriller '– Michael Jackson

'Thriller', released in 1982, is the best-selling album of all time. Michael Jackson’s sixth album has estimated sales of over 65 million copies worldwide, and won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards in 1984. To summarise: this albumalbum did 'quite well'.

MTV holds a significant place in 'Thriller’s' history, as it aired the full 13-minute version of the infamous ‘Thriller’ music video – widely regarded as the most influential pop music video in history - for the first time.

But what does Kent Jones love about the album?

“Quincy Jones ['Thriller’s' producer] is a monster. He’s the master of the craft of culture. He is the culture.

“You kind of say Michael was a pop artist, but Quincy was genius enough to invite the element of soul with pop. From ‘Thriller’ to ‘beat It’ to ‘The Girl Is Mine’ with Paul McCartney – it’s too much! I’d say Quincy Jones is the top level of inspiration for me.”

'The Life of Pablo' – Kanye West

'The Life of Pablo' was a mixed bag. At times, it was sensational - just check ‘Real Friends’ or ‘Saint Pablo’ to hear Kanye West at his honest and introspective best. Plus, as the Sister Nancy sampling second half of ‘Famous’ proved, Kanye is still one of the best producers in the game today. Unfortunately, that brilliance wasn’t on show across the entire album, and the record did pack in quite a few garbage lyrics: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.”

Like a lot of listeners, 'The Life of Pablo’s' raw honesty is what drew Kent Jones in too: “Kanye is honest in his words. He always has been,” Kent said. “It thoroughly defined where he is in life now. And that’s the true honesty in music that’s important.”

“He came from the heart with this one. I’m very proud of him for this album. I’m very happy for him.”

'Black Radio' – Robert Glasper

Like 'Thriller', Robert Glasper’s fifth studio album, 'Black Radio', also won a Grammy. Released in 2012, this ambitious record mixed jazz, hip-hop, soul and R&B into one of the year’s most eclectic albums.

“In-CREDIBLE,”Kent Jones said of Black Radio. “Incredible.”

“Robert Glasper is a jazz musician, he’s the guy that did the music for Kendrick’s last album. That’s who [Kendrick] used, and he’s the guy I studied as a contemporary jazz musician.”
