Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Star Kiernan Shipka Talks Feminism And Why Sabrina Is An “Inspiration”

“I think she is so strong-willed.”

It turns out that Kiernan Shipka is just as obsessed with her character in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as the rest of us.

The actor has opened up in a recent interview with Seventeen magazine about why Sabrina is an “inspiration” and the feminist drive behind the show.

"I'm unreasonably excited that young girls are going to get to have this character be an inspiration to them," she said. "I think she is so strong-willed, has such a good heart, speaks her mind, stands up for herself, and questions things that she feels aren't right."

Kiernan also said, that with the show being aimed more towards her peers, that she’s glad her friends are “genuinely excited to watch the show.”

Although Netflix’s version of Sabrina differs greatly from Sabrina The Teenage Witch, mainly due to it deriving from the comics that originated the character, there are similar themes of feminism in each that Kiernan relates to.

"I gravitate toward feminist content because that's just who I am. But there was something so cool about this show being so feminist while still having this very separate fantastical element," she explained.

Part of the fantastical element that appealed to the actor was its placing in time, adding: "It's sort of set in this 'timeless' period where there aren't many references to pop culture, or what's happening now or what happened in the past.”

“But at the same [time], it's related to what's happening in many different ways and resonates on so many levels," she said.

The show’s coming-of-age, queer, and feminist driven plot lines do resonate with so many.
