The first fully official biography of late grunge rocker Kurt Cobain is coming to the screen courtesy of HBO and Universal.

Titled Montage Of Heck, the movie will get an international cinema release and will be screened on the cable subscription channel.

It will apparently feature "dozens" of songs and performances from Nirvana, along with previously unheard material from Cobain.

[related]The movie will be directed by Brett Morgen, who won an Oscar for his Rolling Stones documentary Crossfire Hurricane - and it's being exec produced by Cobain's daughter Frances Bean Cobain.

Morgen said in a statement: "I started work on this project eight years ago. Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth.

"However, once I stepped into Kurt's archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects — oil paintings, sculptures — countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4,000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media."

Cobain took his own life in 1994 and has been the subject of several documentaries and feature films.
